Warriors of Alavna

If only history lessons were this interesting! During a school trip, Dan and Ursula are mysteriously transported back to First Century Britain where the wild Combrogi tribe battle the all conquering Romans. Both of them must forget their safe, protected 21st Century lives if they are to survive this bloody and tough adventure. Warriors of Alavna is fast and furious and gives a real insight into a time when fighting the enemy didn’t just mean turning on your Play Station.

The Warriors Trilogy

One of the very best magical adventures of the past 30 years . . . [Browne] is a part of the grand Celtic storytelling tradition in British children's literature that began with Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill, continued with T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone and blossomed in Tolkien and Alan Garner

Wolf Blood

The best writing since Sutcliff. Once in a while, a book comes along that blows me out of the water. "Wolf Blood", a young adult novel by NM Browne is one of those, tho' it shouldn't be surprising because I devoured each of Browne's 'Warrior' series in a couple of sittings and loved them: this is children's writing at its best: literate, engaging, straightforward, yet with characters that come alive in the early pages and grow throughout.

Basilisk

A taut mystery…appealing teen characters, the cast of refreshingly complicated adults, and the palpable details of their divided world will keep fantasy devotees firmly anchored in the story…the sounds and sights of Lunnzia are as vivid and memorable as anything in Philip Pullman’s alternate-reality Oxford.

You don’t Say

I have just recently been arguing on line with some writers who think that the only possible speech tag is ‘said.’ I am at that age where I am easily irritated and I am allergic to writing rules of this sort. I am a natural heretic when it comes to style rules and immediately feel obliged to […]

A bout

I am a bout writer; I don’t mean I write about anything in particular, more that I am a lay about for much of the time. I shuffle uncomfortably and look shifty when students or people at parties tell me that real writers write every day. I don’t write about anything at all for months on end. […]

Unhinged

The other day I found myself pontificating about hinged and unhinged thinking. As it happened I was at a party, drink in hand, spouting general gibberish as I am too inclined to do, but unusually and inadvertently I might have said something that is almost true. I need to be unhinged to write or at least to […]
